The return to seeing people again is imminent! It’s been over two years for me since my last show (whether it was a convention or book store event) so I’m both excited and probably also a little hesitant going back into the breach. It’s time, though. Way past time.
I’m not attending TCAF this year - intentionally as I’d like to attend next year when ThunderBoom is released and a few other books are under my belt - but I may stop in during the weekend and hang out at the RAID booth on one of the days for a bit. Pick up some copies of their latest anthology for Ottawa shows I’m planning to go to. Like this new show at the Nepean Sportsplex - PopX - June 24th to the 26th.
It’ll be the first time I’ll be able to hand sell Flip Volume 2, Through The Labyrinths Of The Mind, and the soon-to-be released RAID 4 books. I also plan to have an Aces Weekly package of my New Normal story with Steven Legge, who’ll also be there, along with a digital code of the first chapter of Take 2 as well.
After that, I’m exhibiting at the Orleans Comic Book & Novelty Show July 17th at Place d’Orleans and hoping to have a table at the returning Ottawa Comic Con show at the EY Centre in September. If these go well, and the fall doesn’t lead to any worsening pandemic conditions, maybe a book store event at a local Indigo’s will be next.
So that’s where I’m going in June. How was my May? Projects kept progressing. Muse’s Motel, my 4 issue fantasy series with Dominic Bercier, Hugh Rookwood and Steven Legge for Source Point Press, is progressing on all fronts. The lettering script for issue 1 is complete and I’m 10 pages into the second issue lettering script. Dominic is nearly done pencils for issue 2 while Hugh and Dom are halfway through issue 1 inks. Here’s a page of Dom’s pencils from issue 1:
I have some more Patrik Mock colours I can show you from Growing Up Enchanted, this time from volume 2.
And here’s some Alex Serra pencil roughs for the new cover for the colour collection of Growing Up Enchanted Volume 1.
On the editing side, here’s a page from Back-Up, by Marcello Bondi and the art team of Anna Volcan and Roberta Papalia. Markosia will be publishing this book. Art looks so great…
On the pitching side of things, a couple of pitches I was working on for Aftershock were rejected. But that’s okay…those ideas weren’t the right fit for their lines so something to consider elsewhere then. I have another with them that interests, so let’s see where that goes.
I’m also developing another pitch proposal for my agent and hope to get that into his hands in June. It’s another project I’m doing with Julien Pilon. You saw his awesome Puckheads pitch samples from last newsletter and there’s another work-for-hire project you’ll see from us that I hope we can announce soon…but yes, back to this new pitch project! It’s a new take on a story I wrote years back for middle graders that both of us are excited to do. So I hope to bring you good news about it down the line…but first…here’s the original story and free comic I promised way back in the sub-title at the beginning of this newsletter - Alphabetic Al - with art by Stefan Grambart. I would love to hear any feedback, good or bad, about the story, so please like or comment away.
That’s it for this time. I’ll be back next month with another update or sooner, for any breaking news. I’m also debating whether to add another bi-weekly update that is simply an ongoing series of a couple of pages of free comics from my archives. Not just older published material (like my digital Dominion Jack stories for example) but newer material (like my new Dominion Jack story looking for a print home) or unpublished pitches/samples/scenes/vignettes. So a quick mid-month free comic update followed by my regular longer end of month update, probably with some free comics at the end too like I did here. Maybe let me know in the comments if you’d be up for that. If I don’t hear anything, I’ll take it to mean you love the idea of free comics and hearing from me more! :) Thanks!
