From My Comic Book Archives...
Beginning with Dominion Jack and Boo Bear & Flo: The Dust-Shaped World...
As promised, I’m starting to pull from my archives of past (and present) comics projects to share with you all. Some you may have read, some maybe not. Some will be published stories, others will be pitch samples or partially completed stories that haven’t seen the light of publication day. Yet. First up is Dominion Jack and Boo Bear & Flo.
Dominion Jack is my attempt to write a Canadian legacy superhero series. All of us behind the True Patriot project thought the world needed more Canadian superheroes. So we did just that. The first couple of stories, that were part of a couple of crowd-funded anthologies, I did with artist Ron Salas and he did such an amazing job with the design and look of the characters. Subsequent stories by Dominic Bercier and current artist Hugh Rookwood were published digitally only. I’m currently looking for a print home for the collection of all these stories to date, as well as a new team-up story I’m doing with Hugh and writer Mark Shainblum. So stay tuned for updates on that front. But for now, here’s the first pages from that very first story I did with Ron, titled My Way.
Superheroes. Check. I also like writing fantasy. Growing Up Enchanted was my first real start in comics, that was my own thing anyway. (By all means, do try to find my earliest work - copies of Dragonforce #12 & 13 from Aircel Comics…and have a good laugh!) That story started in my head from seeing my niece try to play pool. From there, it morphed into a fantasy world where she was learning magic rather than the fine art of being a pool shark. With Boo Bear & Flo, its start came from a memory of my nephew being ghastly afraid of vacuums. Like get it away from me, it’s a scary monster afraid. So, I thought of a fantasy adventure where our lead Flo (and her sidekick Boo Bear) get sucked up by a vacuum where shenanigans and hijinks ensue in that world. I did this story with Agnes Garbowska (My Little Pony and DC Superhero Girls) and she (we!) had a ton of fun in the dust-shaped world that she wonderfully crafted in her unique watercolor style. This was originally released digitally through the Saturday Morning WebToons website that J Torres and I pulled together and curated many years ago now. It has never seen print but hope to one day tell the full story. Here’s the first couple of pages of the story…enjoy!
See you in a couple of weeks with my usual end of month update of what’s what…along with a continuation of the stories above!
